I recently went through and listed all my gear since people frequently think I have amazing stuff (spoiler alert, I don't =P)... There's a link at the top of the page, or click here: link
Anyway, I unintentionally did a little side-by-side comparison the other day, I was shooting from above, fairly far away, and my poor 18-200mm lens just doesn't do heights well =P Haha because it is such a heavy lens, when it is not supported by the hand(like you should be doing with your expensive camera lenses, I just don't have that luxury doing self-portraits) and you are shooting down, the lens 'zooms' itself to about 150mm... Not the best when I wanted to get my whole body in the frame (and generally not good for any self-portrait, but that's a different story) So mid-way through the shoot I notice I'm shooting (or hoping to shoot) at about 50mm... And I have a prime 50mm lens! So I switch lenses and try again, this time without having to worry about my heavy lens re-adjusting itself, and with the added bonus of a lower f-stop too! (my 50 goes down to 1.8, the 18-200 has a max range of 3.5) Anyway, enough with the technically blah blah blah, here's the photos:
Aside from seeing how many shots I had to take due to the camera screwing me over (the left is literally the first shot I took, the right one of the last) you can tell the difference a few fstops makes! Look at that gorgeous depth of field the shot from my 50 has! (the right)... Also, despite having the same white balance, the 50mm just has a warmer tone overall, possibly due to letting more light in...
I'm certainly no expert, and my photos are nowhere near professional, but I will certainly say that in this particular instance, having better gear (the 50mm, with it's wider aperture range) did make for a better photo!
Final, edited photo is over on dA, here: link
