Photo Friday: O Winston Link

...And other Sunday fun!

The Story:

After a fabulous dye class (on the blog here) Saturday afternoon, and a wonderful hibachi dinner Saturday night, the muscle man, my bestie, her boy toy, and I headed to bed with plans for an amazing Sunday ahead of us! First we had chicken and waffles at Thelma's(thelmaschickenandwaffles) in their new downtown location which was gorgeous, and of course the food was to die for! I've made chicken and waffles for myself at home, but never gone to a restaurant to eat this southern staple, so it was quite a treat!

Brunch was just the tip of the iceberg though, after that we headed over to a museum dedicated to a photographer! Haha does my bestie know me or what?! The O Winston Link museum is not so much a gallery though, it's really unique in that it's as much a museum about steam trains and train stations as it is to photography, is was really awesome! Even though the gallery doesn't specifically prohibit photography, I just couldn't bring myself to snap pics of the prints, it just seemed totally wrong =P But I got loads of awesome photos of train memorabilia, signs, and old school photo equipment! And because we went on a Rainy Sunday, we just about had the museum to ourselves! In fact we did have the video room to ourselves where they showed a half hour documentary on Link =)

The Review:

I so enjoyed seeing all the photographs, and especially the video we almost didn't watch, I'm glad we did! It didn't give away all of Link's techniques, but it did a fabulous job of hinting at all the work and skill involved in getting the shots just the way he wanted them... As a photographer I was able to extrapolate enough that it was very informative for me, but it required a lot of reading between the lines (as most photographic "how they did it"s tend to be lol =P)   Not that I'd be able to go hop outside and pop off shots of steam trains rolling through town anyway, lol! (although, little history lesson: Birmingham is the place to send steam engines when you need one repaired apparently, so I have a slightly better chance of seeing one that loads of people =P but the last one to be restored was in like 1993... so yeah...)

My muscle man was trying to show off I think and assured me he could get a great shot of me and the equipment... My shot is on the right, and you can see the lighting in the room makes it very easy to catch reflections from the other walls, which I warned him of... But I'm still going to be very kind by posting this one on the left that's kinda in focus thanks to a wide depth of field...Instead of the one where he focused squarely on the reflection of the prints in the glass lol!!
